Scope of Organic Farming in India

CONTEXT
In June 2021, it was noted, exports of India’s organic farm products surged 51 percent in 2020-21 beating COVID-19 induced hiccups in supply chain.
INTRODUCTION

  • The country’s exports of organic food products rose by 51% Y-o-Y to USD1 billion (Nearly Rs. 7078 crore) in 2020-21 as per the commerce ministry of India.
  • The main goods which recorded healthy growth in exports include oil cake meal, oilseeds, fruit pulps, cereals and millets, spices and condiments, tea dry fruits, sugar, pulses, coffee and essential oil.
  • India exported organic products to 58 countries including USA, European Union etc.

 

SCOPE OF ORGANIC FARMING IN INDIA
Organic farming in India has been followed by people since ancient times. India is poised for faster growth with growing domestic market. With increasing awareness about the safety and the quality of the food, long term sustainability of the system, accumulating evidences of being equally productive the organic farming has emerged as an alternative system of the farming.

  • Highest arable cultivated land is also an advantage for harnessing its potentials.

Pure organic farming means avoiding all unnatural chemicals. However, it is somewhat expensive in adopting but we must adopt this keeping in view of high nutritional value & employment opportunity.
