Maiden Indian Navy – EUNAVFOR Exercise in Gulf of Aden

Recent Context

  • On June 18, 2021, the maiden Indian Navy and European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) exercise has begun in the Gulf of Aden.
  • Stealth frigate INS Trikand, was participated in the two day exercise in Gulf of Aden as it was already deployed in the region on anti-piracy operations.
  • A virtual information sharing exercise is also being conducted between the Indian Navy Information Fusion Centre India Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) andMaritime Security Centre Horn of Africa.


  • Ships of the four navies endeavoured to enhance and hone their war-fighting skills and their ability as an integrated force to promote, peace, security and stability in the maritime domain.


  • The European Union Naval Force Somalia (EUNAVFOR)- Operation ATALANTA was launched on 8th December 2008 in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions.
  • Mission – Its core mission is to protect vessels of the World Food Programme (WFP) and other vulnerable shipping and deter, prevent and repress piracy and armed robbery at Sea.
  • It also monitors fishing activities off the coast of Somalia.
  • The operational headquarters of EUNAVFOR Somalia is located in Rota (Spain).


  • EUNAVFOR and the Indian Navy converge on multiple issues including counter piracy operations and protection of vessels deployed under the charter of World Food Programme (UN WFP).
  • Indian Navy and EUNAVFOR also have regular interaction through SHADE (Shared Awareness and De-confliction) meetings held annually at Bahrain.

  • This engagement showcases increased levels of synergy, coordination and inter-operability between India and EUNAVFOR.
  • It also underscores the shared values as partner navies, in ensuring freedom of seas and commitment to an open, inclusive and a rules- based international order.
