CEM – Industrial Deep Decarbonization Initiative (IDDI)

Recent Context

  • On June 3, 2021, India along with Govt. of United Kingdom launched new workstream to promote industrial energy efficiency under the Clean Energy Ministerial’s (CEM)- Industrial Deep DecarbonizationInitiative (IDDI)coordinated by UNIDOC (United Nations Development Industrial Organization).
  • It was launched during the 12th CEM (CEM-12) meeting, which is virtually hosted by Chile.

Objectives of the IDDI

  • This initiative aims to create market demand for low carbon industrial materials, especially more sustainable steel and cement.
  • Steel and cement – which each represent around 6-8 percent of energy related emissions globally, the highly energy intensive production of steel and cement must be confronted in the global effort to slash emissions.
  • Reaching net-zero CO2 emissions for these sectors.
  • The objective is to infuse green technologies and stimulate demand for low-carbon industrial material.

About 12th CEM Meeting

  • The 12th CEM hosted by Chile, to determine the medium and long-run role of clean energy in supporting the economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The theme of CEM-12 was – “Ambition into Action – Turning a year of Ambition into a decade of Delivery”.
  • India is committed to cut emissions intensity per unit of GDP by 33 to 35 percent by 2030.
  • The commitment hinges on effective deployment of low carbon technology in Energy Intensive sectors like Iron & Steel, Cement & Petrochemicals.
  • Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) was established in December 2009 at the UN’s framework convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties in Copenhagen.
  • It has 29 members countries India is also a member of CEM.

Interesting Facts

Members of the CEM account for about 81% of global clean energy investments and 83% of global greenhouse gas emission.

Conclusion

UNIDO’s mandate is fully recognized in SDG-9 which calls to “Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation”.
