India’s first ‘Flow Chemistry Technology Hub’

Why in News?

  • On 4th May 2022 India got its first ‘Flow Chemistry Technology Hub’ lab. The lab was set up at Dr Reddy’s Institute of Life Sciences (DRILS) in the city of Hyderabad.
  • Lab has been set up by Telangana Government together with industry partners.

What is flow chemistry?

  • “Flow chemistry”, sometimes referred to as “plug flow” or “continuous flow chemistry” is the process of performing chemical reactions in a tube or pipe.
  • Reactive components are pumped together at a mixing junction and flowed down a temperature-controlled pipe or tube.
  • This provides some major advantages such as faster reactions, cleaner products, safer reactions and easy scale-up.

Usability of the Hub

  • The hub houses various state-of-the-art flow chemistry equipment.
  • It provides hands-on training and promotes scientific capability building.
  • This will ensure greater incorporation of flow chemistry techniques in the pharma R&D and greater adoption of continuous synthesis for manufacturing of Active Pharma Ingredients (APIs).

  • This hub is expected to promulgate adoption of flow chemistry from laboratory to manufacturing, and transition to more modern approaches to pharmaceutical manufacturing.
  • It is expected to facilitate pharma industry make a paradigm shift towards incorporation of modern approaches from R&D to manufacturing and migration to greener and sustainable processes.
