75th Edition of the World Health Assembly

Why in News?

  • From 22 to 28th May 2022 World Health Assembly was organized by World Health Organisation (WHO).
  • This is the 75th edition of World Health Assembly which was held in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • It is the first in-person Health Assembly since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The theme of this year’s Health Assembly is: Health for peace, peace for health.

What is World Health Assembly?

  • The World Health Assembly is the decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • It is a forum through which the World Health Organization (WHO) is governed by its 194 member states.
  • It is highest policy setting body of WHO and world in the field of health.
  • It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

Functions of World Health Assembly

  • To determine the policies of the Organization
  • To appoint the Director-General (of WHO)
  • To supervise financial policies
  • To review and approve the proposed programme budget

Organisation

  • The Health Assembly is held annually in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • It is attended by delegations from all WHO Member States and focuses on a specific health agenda prepared by the Executive Board.
  • Each year, the WHA elects members from among its ranks to renew the executive board.
  • Executive Board is chosen as per constitution of WHO and has equitable geographical distribution in terms of its members.

  • Architecture for Pandemic Preparedness
  • Digital Transformation for Health
  • Food Systems and Health
  • Health Systems Resilience and Equity
  • India’s Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) workers were awarded the Global Health Leaders Award at the ongoing assembly.
  • India’s union health secretary, Rajesh Bhushan has been appointed as the chairperson of the Committee B at the 75th World Health Assembly (WHA).
  • Committee B primarily discusses administrative and financial matters of the World Health Organization (WHO).
