India gets elected to Four UN ECOSOC bodies

Recent Context

  • In April 2022, India has been elected to four key bodies of the UN Economic and Social Council, including the Commission on Science and Technology for Development.

  • Preeti  Saran of India was elected by acclamation for the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights for a four-year term of office beginning on January 1, 2023.

About Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

  • The UN Charter established ECOSOC in 1945 as one of the six main organs of the United Nations.
  • The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) under the overall authority of the General Assembly, coordinates the economic and social work of the United Nations and the UN family of organizations.
  • The Council has 54 members, elected by the General Assembly for three-year terms.
  • It meets throughout the year and holds a major session in July, during which a high-level meeting of Ministers discusses major economic, social and humanitarian issues.
