Powerthon-2022

Recent Context

  • In February 2022, Ministry of Power launched Powerthon 2022.

Why Powerthon-2022?

  • Currently the power distribution utilities in India face numerous challenges, that limited their ability to improve upon the AT&C (Aggregate Technical & Commercial) loss level and ACoS-ARR {Average Cost of Supply (ACS) and the Average Revenue Realized (ARR) } gap.
  • To overcome this, RDSS was launched and Powerthon-2022 is an initiative under it.

Key Points about Hackathon

  • It will deliberate on finding technology-driven solutions to solve the complex problems in power distribution to ensure quality and reliable power supply.
  • It will see participation from Startups, Technology Solution Providers (TSPs), Educational and Research Institutions, Equipment manufacturers and State Power Utilities and other power entities.
  • It will act as a platform for competitive screening of the established TSPs and startups to showcase their technology driven solutions to address the current challenges.
  • The solutions can be based on any advanced emerging technologies like AI/ML, Blockchain, IoT, VR/AR etc.

The nine themes for the hackathon are –

  • Demand/load forecasting
  • AT&C (Aggregate Technical and Commercial) loss reduction
  • Energy theft detection
  • Prediction of DT (Distribution Transformer) failure
  • Asset inspection
  • Vegetation management
  • Consumer experience enhancement
  • Renewable energy integration and power purchase optimisation

  • The government of India has approved the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to help DISCOMs improve their operational efficiencies and financial sustainability by providing result-linked financial assistance to DISCOMs to strengthen supply infrastructure based on meeting pre-qualifying criteria and achieving basic minimum benchmarks.
  • All the existing power sector reforms schemes such as Integrated Power Development Scheme, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana have been merged into this umbrella program.

Conclusion

  • Power discoms in the country are under severe stress and to make them sustainable employing technology driven solutions is need of the hour.
